Responsible Gaming
Where to get help
If gambling is becoming a problem for you or someone close to you, call the National Responsible Gambling Programme on 0800 006 008 (toll-free in South Africa). The programme offers free, confidential counselling and treatment. Internationally, GamCare (gamcare.org.uk) runs a 24/7 helpline, and Gamblers Anonymous (gamblersanonymous.org) lists local meetings. Reaching out early makes recovery easier.
Limits and tools
Slotpal lets you set deposit limits, loss limits, session-time reminders and self-exclusion periods from inside your account. Use them before you need them — a limit set in a calm moment is more useful than one set after a bad session. If you want to stop gambling altogether, request a self-exclusion for six or twelve months. The operator must honour the request and must not solicit you with promotions during the exclusion period.
Myths about gambling
A losing streak does not make a win "due" — slot results are independent, and the odds of the next spin are the same as the odds of the first. There is no system that beats a legally run casino over the long run. Chasing losses to "get even" is one of the clearest signs of problem gambling, not a strategy. Gambling cannot reliably fix money problems, boredom or stress — if that is why you are playing, stop and look at other options.
Signs of problem
Problem gambling rarely shows up as a single big crisis — it builds up through smaller signs. Spending more than you can afford, hiding how much you gamble from family or friends, borrowing to gamble, missing work or sleep, feeling anxious when you are not gambling, chasing losses, and lying about wins or losses are all signs it is time to stop and get help. If three or more of these apply to you, call the National Responsible Gambling Programme.
